Review: Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery

Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery
Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery by John D. Clare
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Some of the poems are brilliant, and some are not very good. The collection is not bad as a whole though, considering the fact that this was his first published one and the majority of the poems were written in irksome haste during brief breaks of exhaustive labour in the fields. I bought this rare reprint of Clare’s first collection at Southwell Poetry Festival. The book and the festival have been a great introduction to John Clare, the peasant poet.

The good poems are very enjoyable and depict beautifully detailed pictures of life in the countryside with its highs and lows.

Gladstone, Disraeli And Later Victorian Politics
Gladstone, Disraeli And Later Victorian Politics by Paul Adelman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gladstone, Disraeli And Later Victorian Politics starts from where Democracy And Reform stops, and it also is easy and simple to read, but concentrates mainly on the mid and late Victorian politics with enough of its messy details; highlighting the landmarks of the transformation towards the modern two-party system
